💭 We make thousands of decisions every day.
For an energy-efficient human system, that requires a degree of automation. So much of what we do happens on autopilot. Think about how many things you’ve already done today without much thought, planning or effort.
Thats a remarkable advantage for survival.
But that’s just it.
Its an advantage for survival.
And somewhere along the way, many of us never move beyond surviving.
We become so deeply embedded in autopilot that we forget to truly live. We stop listening to ourselves. We lose touch with what we want, what feels meaningful, and the life we once imagined creating.
Until something interrupts the pattern. A relationship we took for granted abruptly ends. The health issue we’ve been procrastinating about becomes the diagnosis we feared.
Or sometimes, there’s no dramatic event at all.
We simply stop recognising ourselves. Its the day you look in the mirror and realise that underneath everything you’ve built, achieved and held together, you feel… nothing.
Hollow. Disconnected. Maybe even hopeless. And I’ve been thinking about this: Why do so many of the greatest catalysts in our lives seem to arrive disguised as hopelessness?
Failure. Loss. Emptyness. Why does it sometimes take the complete dismantling of who we thought we were before we finally become curious about who we actually are?
Maybe because when everything is on autopilot, we have very little time to question it. We keep moving. Keep achieving. Keep repeating. Keep becoming more efficient at living a life we may never have consciously chosen.
Until something stops us.
And perhaps thats what the catalyst really is.
Not life falling apart. But the interruption of autopilot. The moment the old way of being no longer works and for the first time in a very long time, we are forced to listen.
Not to what the world expects from us.
Not to who we’ve been.
But to ourselves.
And perhaps the question isn’t always: How do I get my old life back?
Perhaps its:
Now that I am finally listening, what kind of life do I actually want to create?
